Why it's Wildland
7.4Mountain water, slate workings and a lakeside railway: a landscape shaped as much by industry as by the Moelwyn mountains.
The interest here goes beyond a pretty stretch of water. Slate-quarrying slopes, the Ffestiniog Railway and a pumped-storage reservoir give a compact waterside walk a distinctive industrial mountain setting.

The experience
Follow the published reservoir circuit for changing views across Llyn Ystradau towards the Moelwyn landscape. Allow extra time for photographs and wet ground, then finish at the lakeside café if open. This is a shore-based visit: AllTrails warns against swimming and other water activities because of depth and submerged catchment infrastructure.
Things to do
Walk around Llyn Ystradau
Use the published 4.7 km circular route for views across the reservoir. AllTrails grades it moderate and records 86 m of ascent; boggy sections mean this is not simply a paved lakeside promenade. Check current passability.
1–1.5 hours walking; allow longer for stops
Frame the water against the industrial mountain landscape
Pause on the walking route for views combining the reservoir, rugged Moelwyn slopes and slate-quarrying landscape. The contrast is the defining subject here, rather than an untouched mountain lake.
Finish beside the lakeside railway
Look for the Ffestiniog Railway running beside the village and reservoir, then stop at the nearby café if open. A passing train is not guaranteed.

Verified history
Llyn Ystradau is an engineered reservoir, not simply a mountain lake. It forms the lower part of a pumped-storage system: water is pumped uphill to Llyn Stwlan on the Moelwyn Mawr slope and released back down to generate electricity. The surrounding landscape carries an older industrial story too, with Cwmorthin Quarry and Wrysfan Slate Mine north of Tanygrisiau. The Ffestiniog Railway still runs beside the village and water, bringing another strand of that industrial landscape into view.
Hidden details
The steps in the village name — AllTrails translates Tanygrisiau as 'below the steps', relating the name to the quarries on the slopes north of the village. It is a useful clue to reading the worked landscape above the water.
The other reservoir in the story — The water here is linked operationally to Llyn Stwlan higher on the mountain. Understanding that uphill connection changes the view from a scenic lake into part of an electricity-generating system; this is not a recommendation to enter operational areas.
When to go
· Daylight; no particular hour is established by the supplied evidence.
The source row recommends spring and summer. No specific seasonal wildlife or flowering peak is substantiated.
Boggy paths, wet grass and stream crossings are reported. Wear suitable walking footwear and check recent conditions. AllTrails warns against swimming and other water activities because of depth and submerged catchment tubes; do not treat shoreline access as permission to enter the water.

Best time to go
Spring and summer for the walk; choose a clear day after relatively dry weather.
Spring and summer are suggested by the source row, but visibility and recent rainfall matter more than a particular month. Choose daylight and relatively dry conditions for the boggy sections and stream crossings.
