Why it's Wildland

5.9

At Rutter Force, water, industry and everyday village life meet in one compact scene: Hoff Beck drops over a waterfall beside a former mill whose turbine once supplied electricity to Great Asby. In heavy flow, the water spreads across the falls; in quieter conditions, it runs over one side of the cliff.

The appeal is the rare combination of a dramatic beck-side waterfall and a working landscape you can still read in the old mill and waterwheel. Its scale makes it a short stop, but the story of a local hydroelectric scheme gives the place more depth than a waterfall view alone.

The experience

Visit the falls and footbridge viewpoint, look across to the old mill and waterwheel, and follow the water’s course through the scene. For a longer outing, a published circular walk from Hoff passes the waterfall and returns across open views towards the North Pennines. This is not evidence of permission to swim or paddle.

Things to do

01

View the waterfall from the footbridge

Take in the falls from the narrow footbridge described as the best viewpoint. The waterfall can be a narrow pour in quieter conditions or spread across the cliff in spate; keep clear of unsafe water and the ford.

10–20 minutes

02

Look at Rutter Mill and its waterwheel

The former mill stands beside the falls. It began as a corn mill and later served as a bobbin mill and timber mill; its waterwheel is now a replica, according to the history source.

10–20 minutes

03

Walk the Hoff Beck circular route

A published 6 km circular walk from Hoff follows paths beside the beck to Rutter Force and returns by a route with views towards the North Pennines. The source notes muddy sections, stiles and a quiet lane; check its directions and current conditions before setting out.

Verified history

Rutter Mill was a corn mill and later a bobbin mill and timber mill. In 1928 the Great Asby Electric Light and Water Company installed a turbine at Rutter Force to generate electricity for Great Asby and nearby farmhouses. The scheme operated for 23 years, until 1951, according to Eden Rivers Trust; the National Grid reached Great Asby in 1952, according to Britain Express. The sources describe unreliable supply, including residents briefly switching on electric lights before relying on candles and oil lamps. The mill and waterwheel remain visible beside the falls; the wheel is described as a replica by Britain Express.

Hidden details

The unreliable village electricity supply — The turbine’s electricity could be so variable that residents reportedly switched on their lights just long enough to see while lighting candles or oil lamps. The waterwheel and mill beside the waterfall help make the story tangible.

Three streams meet above the falls — Scale Beck and Asby Beck join just above the waterfall to form Hoff Beck. Asby Beck is described as being formed by limestone potholes at Great Asby.

When to go

September · October · November · Choose a clear period when the paths and water can be viewed safely; no specific time of day is established by the sources.

Eden Rivers Trust says the waterfall is beautiful throughout the year but particularly attractive in autumn. Its appearance also changes with the flow, from a quieter pour to a broad wall of water in spate.

After wet weather, the ford may be impassable and paths can be muddy or wet. Do not attempt the ford in high water; check conditions before setting out.
