Why it's Wildland
6.2On a spur above the River Dove, Pilsbury Castle is now a landscape of earthworks rather than stone walls. Its broad motte, three baileys, ditches and ramparts preserve the outline of a substantial medieval stronghold, with buried archaeological remains across the site.
Pilsbury Castle makes its history legible in the land itself: a high motte, several enclosed baileys and deep defensive ditches set above the Dove valley. It is a rewarding stop for anyone who enjoys reading a medieval site through its surviving earthworks and surrounding landscape.

Verified history
Historic England identifies Pilsbury Castle Hills as a medieval motte-and-bailey castle and a Scheduled Monument. Its remains include a conical motte, three baileys enclosed by ramparts and ditches, a southern outwork and an area of earthworks to the north. The listing describes the monument as well preserved, with buried remains of buildings across the site. The broad summit of the motte is interpreted as evidence for a shell keep. The site was first listed on 13 October 1937; the listing was amended on 13 January 1994.
Hidden details
A keep suggested by the motte’s summit — Historic England notes that the motte’s broad summit is consistent with a shell keep: a circular enclosure with timber buildings arranged inside it.
Earthworks beyond the central mound — The scheduled monument includes a southern outwork and a northern occupation area, where earthworks have been interpreted as pens and structures associated with the castle.
When to go
April · May · June · July · August · September · A clear morning or afternoon, with enough daylight for the approach and any planned walk.
The sources do not establish a special seasonal wildlife or flowering highlight. Longer daylight can make it easier to plan a visit and any surrounding walk; check ground and route conditions after rain.
Route sources report muddy ground in places, inclines and river crossings on the longer circuit. Check current weather and crossing conditions, wear suitable footwear and do not attempt a crossing if conditions are unsafe.
