Why it's Wildland

5.5

A red-sandstone ruin stands above Lunan Bay, but the safest way to appreciate it is from the estuary below. Its surviving tower and massive curtain wall hint at a medieval stronghold shaped by the coast and centuries of change.

Red Castle earns its place for the striking contrast between a weathered medieval ruin and the open Angus coast. The experience is about taking in the castle from a safe viewpoint across the estuary—not exploring the restricted, unstable structure.

Verified history

Red Castle’s surviving remains are chiefly a 15th-century tower and an east curtain wall about two metres thick. The surrounding enceinte may date from the 13th century. The name appears as rubeum castrum in deeds of 1286, referring to the area’s burnished red sandstone. In 1328, Robert the Bruce gave the castle to the Earl of Ross during a reallocation of property. A midden below the castle is eroding and has yielded artefacts now held by Montrose Museum. The ruin is a scheduled monument.

Hidden details
