Why it's Wildland

8.6

Vindolanda’s writing tablets preserve everyday messages from Roman Britain, found in oxygen-free deposits beneath the site. The fort was rebuilt repeatedly, leaving successive communities visible in the archaeology.

Vindolanda brings a major Roman frontier site and its human details together: excavated fort and settlement remains outdoors, with remarkable wooden writing tablets and other finds in the museum. It earns its place for the unusually direct connection between landscape, archaeology and everyday Roman life.

Verified history

Vindolanda stood on the Stanegate frontier road, south of Hadrian’s Wall. The Trust says it was built before the Wall, later served as a garrison and construction base, and was demolished and rebuilt at least nine times. It remained in use after Roman imperial forces left Britain and was finally abandoned in the 9th century. Its waterlogged archaeological deposits preserved wooden writing tablets, including messages that illuminate private and military life. The museum’s collection continues to grow through excavations.

Hidden details

A wooden toilet seat and toy sword — The Trust singles out both objects among the ancient wooden finds displayed in the Wooden Underworld gallery—small, familiar objects that make the archaeological record feel unusually close to everyday life.

The tablets survived in oxygen-free deposits — The Trust explains that the writing tablets were recovered from oxygen-free deposits around the floors of deeply buried early wooden forts, helping preserve these fragile messages.
