Why it's Wildland
5.2An elegant Georgian villa at the edge of Greenwich Park holds Sir Julius Wernher’s remarkable collection: nearly 700 works ranging from Renaissance bronzes and Dutch Old Masters to medieval jewellery and tapestries.
Ranger’s House earns its place for the contrast between its calm Greenwich Park setting and the vivid, unexpected details inside: tiny carved works, glittering jewellery and Wernher’s taste for what he called the ‘splendidly ugly’. It is a distinctive heritage visit, best paired with time outdoors in the park.

Verified history
Ranger’s House is an elegant Georgian villa now used to display the Wernher Collection. Sir Julius Wernher assembled the collection, which includes works from different periods and traditions, among them Dutch Old Masters, Renaissance bronzes and silver, medieval and Renaissance jewellery, and tapestries. The house is also recognised as the exterior used for the Bridgerton family home in the television series. English Heritage’s listing describes the house and collection but does not provide a full building chronology.
Hidden details
The collector’s taste for the ‘splendidly ugly’ — English Heritage says Wernher was drawn to tiny, unusual artworks expertly made from rich materials, describing some as ‘splendidly ugly’. Look for the character and craftsmanship of the smaller objects rather than only the grand paintings.
The Bridgerton exterior — The villa’s exterior was used as the Bridgerton family home in the television series. The screen connection belongs to the outside of the house; the collection is the reason to explore inside.
