Why it's Wildland
7.2Built as part of Sir Christopher Wren’s design for the Royal Hospital for Seamen, this chapel was rebuilt after a devastating fire and is known for its richly decorated neo-classical interior.
Its appeal lies in the detail: a light blue and cream ceiling designed by John Papworth, naval-themed decoration and an altarpiece by Benjamin West. It is a distinctive historic interior within Greenwich’s Old Royal Naval College, rather than a chapel whose story rests on age alone.

Verified history
The chapel was built between 1696 and 1712 as part of Sir Christopher Wren’s original design for the Royal Hospital for Seamen. Following a devastating fire, it was rebuilt in 1779 by James ‘Athenian’ Stuart. Its surviving features include a neo-classical ceiling designed by master plasterer John Papworth and an altarpiece by Benjamin West. The Old Royal Naval College describes it as an active site of Christian worship that also hosts services, recitals, concerts and special events.
Hidden details
Carved, not cast — The chapel’s central ceiling ornaments were carved rather than made from moulds—a detail easy to miss when taking in the ceiling as a whole.
A Wedgwood-inspired palette — The ceiling’s light blue and cream colouring follows a Wedgwood-inspired scheme.
