Why it's Wildland
7.1Built on the former Stave Dock, this 5.2-acre urban nature park brings grassland, woodland, scrub and wetland habitats together in the heart of Rotherhithe. Its neighbouring Stave Hill viewing point also carries a plaque showing the extent of the former docks.
The interest here is the collision of habitat and history: a deliberately created wildlife mosaic on ground shaped by London’s former timber docks, beside a hill with broad views across the city. It offers a more particular story than a conventional urban park.

Verified history
Stave Hill Ecological Park occupies the site of Stave Dock, within the former Surrey Commercial Dock. The London Docklands Development Corporation offered the site to the Trust for Urban Ecology in early 1984 as a replacement for the William Curtis Ecological Park. Landscaping began in 1986, and the park was handed over to the Trust in 1988. Surrey Docks, a major timber port, operated from the 1860s until the early 1970s. Much of the dock area later became derelict; most docks and timber ponds were filled with domestic waste, rubble and subsoil. Material from redevelopment was used to landscape the park and adjacent Stave Hill viewing point. A plaque at the top of the hill shows the former docks’ extent.
Hidden details
The park sits on a former timber dock — The reserve occupies the site of Stave Dock, part of the former Surrey Commercial Dock system. Its present habitats were created during redevelopment of the docklands.
A plaque maps the old docks — At the top of Stave Hill, the plaque shows the extent of the former docks and timber ponds—an on-site clue to the area’s working history.
The wildlife landscape was made, not inherited — TCV says the habitat mosaic was created by sowing and planting on poor soil, with additions including sand, spent mushroom compost and mulches in some places.
