Why it's Wildland

5.8

Once a shallow timber pond in the Surrey Commercial Docks, Lavender Pond is now a small urban nature park where boardwalks cross wetland habitats beside the docks’ surviving Pumphouse.

A compact nature reserve with an unusually tangible past: the pond’s wetlands sit on the site of a former timber dock, and the old Pumphouse still anchors the view. Its boardwalks bring visitors close to habitats in the middle of Rotherhithe.

Verified history

Lavender Pond Nature Park was created in 1981 as a wildlife haven, local amenity and educational resource. Its site was once a shallow timber pond in the Surrey Commercial Docks, where timber was kept afloat to prevent it drying and cracking. The entrance for boats and lighters was blocked in 1928 when the Port of London Authority built the Pumphouse. TCV says the building still dominates the scene and is one of the few structures left from the docks’ heyday.

Hidden details

The pond was once part of a working timber dock — The former shallow pond held timber afloat to help prevent it drying and cracking.

The Pumphouse marks the former entrance — The old entrance for boats and lighters was blocked in 1928 when the Port of London Authority built the Pumphouse.

A compact park with several habitats — TCV describes a 2.5-acre park with varied habitats and a mix of areas left relatively undisturbed and areas used by visitors and schoolchildren.
