Why it's Wildland
5.7Columns and stonework from the ancient Libyan city of Leptis Magna were brought to Windsor Great Park and assembled here as a folly in 1826.
A surprising Roman connection tucked into the Virginia Water landscape: this is an early-19th-century folly made from stones taken from Leptis Magna, not the remains of a Roman building in England. Its setting makes it a rewarding stop on a longer lakeside walk.

Verified history
The folly was created in 1826 from columns, pedestals and slabs recovered from Leptis Magna, an ancient city in present-day Libya. The stones were gifted to the Prince Regent in 1816 and spent time in the British Museum before being brought to Windsor Great Park. The park says Leptis Magna flourished in the first and second centuries AD. The ruins were restored in 2009 and are fenced to protect their age and delicate condition.
Hidden details
The stones travelled from Libya — The columns and other stonework were recovered from Leptis Magna, gifted to the Prince Regent in 1816, and later assembled as a folly at Virginia Water.
A protected ruin, not an open archaeological site — The ruins are fenced because of their age and delicate nature; view them without entering the protected area.
