Why it's Wildland
6.1A vast Norman-revival castle built for the Earls of Gosford took decades to complete. Today it stands within a forest park, where visitors can see its exterior from park trails—but cannot tour the castle itself.
The appeal here is the meeting of a striking 19th-century castle and a substantial woodland-and-parkland setting. Forest Park trails offer a way to explore the wider grounds, but the castle remains a view from outside, not an interior visit.

Verified history
The park authority dates the castle to the early 19th century, when it was built for the Second Earl of Gosford. A more detailed account says Archibald Acheson, 2nd Earl of Gosford, commissioned architect Thomas Hopper in 1819; construction continued into the 1850s. During the Second World War, the building was commandeered for military use and later held German prisoners of war. The forest park authority describes the castle as a mock Norman design and notes its appearance in HBO’s Game of Thrones.
