Why it's Wildland

6.0

A small Cornish cove with a working past written into its buildings: the old pilchard cellars and former lifeboat house remain reminders of the fishing and rescue histories that shaped this shore.

Church Cove rewards the short detour from the Lizard’s main route with a compact meeting of coast, hamlet and maritime history. Its old pilchard cellars and former lifeboat house give the cove more to discover than its beach alone suggests.

Verified history

Church Cove was formerly known as Perranvose, Parnvose or Lizard Cove. The local history account says the lifeboat house was built in 1885 with money given in memory of members of the Chavasse family; the station closed in 1899 when a newer, larger vessel went to Polpeor Cove. The same account describes surviving old pilchard cellars and says steamships brought day-trippers from Falmouth from about the 1870s into the following century.

Hidden details

The lifeboat house inscription — The history source reports an inscription above the door commemorating T and H S Chavasse and the Rev. and M. C. Chavasse, whose family donation funded the building.

A cove many visitors pass by — A local history article observes that many visitors heading for the UK mainland’s southernmost point pass through Lizard village without making the short detour towards Church Cove.

When to go

A visitor review notes flowers around the cove in spring and summer. Clearer weather can make the coastal setting easier to enjoy, but no seasonal access guarantee is provided.
