Why it's Wildland
6.2A small Brixton park is home to the Grade II* listed Brixton Windmill, once used to grind grain and still standing after the open land around it was gradually built over.
The gardens are modest, but the surviving Brixton Windmill gives this neighbourhood green space an unusual and tangible industrial story. It is worth a short visit for the contrast between the historic mill and its urban setting.

Verified history
Brixton Windmill was used to grind corn and other cereals for flour. As land around it was sold and developed during the nineteenth century, the mill increasingly lacked sufficient wind to operate. It finally ceased working in the 1930s. Lambeth Council bought 2.5 acres around the windmill in 1957 and made the site a public open space. After local residents campaigned for its protection, a 2010 grant supported restoration so it could start grinding corn again and offer managed public access to discover its contents and construction. The council says the Brixton Windmill Centre was completed in July 2020.
Hidden details
The changing landscape around the mill — The windmill once stood amid open land. Housing and other development gradually reduced that open space, making it harder for the mill to catch enough wind to work.
A local campaign helped bring the mill back — Local residents formed the Friends of Windmill Gardens and campaigned for the mill’s protection and restoration. Lambeth reports that restoration funding arrived in 2010.
