Why it's Wildland
5.9A patch of mixed woodland in the middle of Plymouth was saved from development and transformed into a community-led wildlife haven, with ponds, coppiced glades and paths shaped around its habitats.
Tulgey Woods stands out for bringing a varied, actively cared-for woodland habitat into the heart of Plymouth. Its ponds, coppiced glades and community conservation work give it more ecological character than its modest city setting might suggest.

Verified history
Sid and Sam Remmer bought the approximately 10-acre site in 2014 after it came up for auction. The land had been described as a dumping ground, and plans for housing had been refused. With volunteer help, they worked to restore it as a woodland sanctuary, creating ponds, coppiced glades, bird boxes and paths. The sanctuary later became a Community Interest Company; Companies House records its incorporation as a CIC on 30 June 2020.
Hidden details
The woodland’s four ponds — The site’s restoration includes four ponds. The feature reports that pond water is collected from the roof of the owners’ neighbouring house using large water butts.
A Turner connection — The feature identifies a spot in the sanctuary where JMW Turner is said to have sat and painted the view down the valley towards Plymouth Sound during his 1813 visit to the city. Confirm access and the precise location with the sanctuary.
A community-made willow figure — The large wicker sculpture Devonia was created during community sessions, according to the feature. Its current condition and accessibility are not confirmed.
