Why it's Wildland

3.5

A Victorian cemetery chapel now has a life beyond its original purpose: following restoration, the building was converted into a private home. The surrounding cemetery offers a quiet glimpse of Putney’s Victorian past, but the chapel itself is not open to visitors.

This is a modest heritage stop rather than a destination for a long visit. Its interest lies in the contrast between a Victorian cemetery setting and a chapel given a new, private use; the chapel is viewed from outside, not entered.

Verified history

Putney Lower Common Cemetery was laid out and opened in 1855 on land from the estate of Earl Spencer. The chapel, lodge and boundary wall were designed by Barnett and Birch and built by W and R Aviss. The cemetery officially closed in 1891 when Putney Vale Cemetery opened, although burials continued until the 1970s. After restoration work, the chapel was converted into a private dwelling.

Hidden details

The chapel’s changed purpose — The chapel building is no longer a public chapel: it was restored and converted into a private dwelling. Treat it as an exterior heritage feature, not an open building.

A small habitat on the gravestones — Mosses, lichens and stonecrops are reported on the cemetery’s tombstones.
