Why it's Wildland

5.3

A hillside patchwork of heath, birch woodland, scrub and moorland above the Rivelin Valley, with views across the dams and towards neighbouring Wyming Brook.

Fox Hagg brings together several habitats on one hillside: heather and bilberry heath, scattered birch, woodland and scrub, with the Rivelin Valley opening out below. Its old holly-hagg use still has a visible trace in the holly remnants around Allen Sike.

Verified history

Fox Hagg was once managed as a holly hagg: soft, spikeless upper holly leaves were cut to provide winter fodder for sheep and cattle. The Wildlife Trust says remnants of holly remain around Allen Sike and along the reserve’s northern edge. The reserve is now managed to encourage wildlife, including by cutting small areas of scrub on a five-year cycle and controlling bracken to help heather grow.

Hidden details

Holly from the old holly hagg — Look for holly remnants in the Allen Sike gully and along the north edge, a surviving trace of the former practice of cutting holly leaves for livestock fodder.
