Why it's Wildland

3.4

At Hyde Park Corner, Wellington sits astride Copenhagen, the horse associated with his military career. The bronze monument was unveiled in 1888, more than three decades after the Duke’s death.

This is a brief heritage stop rather than a wild landscape destination. Its appeal lies in a distinctive bronze equestrian monument, its Waterloo story and its position facing Wellington’s former London home, Apsley House.

Verified history

Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington (1769–1852), led the allied army to victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815 and later served as prime minister. Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm’s bronze statue depicts him seated on Copenhagen. Unveiled in 1888, it faces Apsley House, Wellington’s London home. Its pink-granite plinth is decorated with four figures representing a Grenadier, a Scottish Highlander, an Irish Dragoon and a Welsh Fusilier. English Heritage says it replaced an earlier statue by Matthew Coates Wyatt that had stood on the nearby Wellington Arch.
