Why it's Wildland
3.8Belgrave Square was part of the transformation of the former Five Fields into Belgravia. Its grand terraces and formal square reflect an ambitious early 19th-century estate plan, while the central garden remains private to residents.
Belgrave Square is more an architectural encounter than a green escape: its registered historic garden and imposing terraces offer a concentrated glimpse of how London’s Belgravia was planned and built. The central garden is not generally open to visitors, so the experience is chiefly from the surrounding streets.

Verified history
Historic England records Belgrave Square as one of four early 19th-century garden squares established as part of the Belgravia town-planning scheme, and lists the registered park and garden as Grade II. The estate’s land had previously included the Five Fields, described in the list entry as open land. The entry says Thomas Cundy adapted an earlier plan and that Thomas Cubitt was the main developer; Cubitt addressed marshy ground by using earth excavated from St Katherine’s Dock to raise it. The square was first listed on 1 October 1987.
