Why it's Wildland

5.2

A Grade II-listed tower within Walthamstow Wetlands, where London’s Victorian water-supply infrastructure meets an internationally important wetland landscape.

Coppermill Tower offers a rare meeting of industrial heritage and wetland scenery inside London. Its appeal is the contrast: a historic landmark set within reservoirs that still supply the capital, with a viewing platform overlooking the wider landscape. Check that the tower is open before making a special trip.

Verified history

The River Lea once served as a transport route and powered mills in the area. From the mid-19th century, reservoirs transformed a landscape of rivers, marshes and farmland. The East London Waterworks Company received permission to develop reservoirs at Walthamstow in 1852; the first three were completed by 1863. Coppermill Tower is Grade II listed. The wider reserve reopened to the public in 2017, and its reservoirs continue to supply London with drinking water.

Hidden details

A landscape reshaped for London’s water — The present reservoir landscape replaced an earlier rural setting of marshes, farmland and riverside industry.

The reservoirs remain part of the water supply — The reservoirs are not simply historic features: London Wildlife Trust says they continue to provide Londoners with drinking water.
