Why it's Wildland
4.7A Victorian market clock tower offers a close-up of its working clock mechanism and, on a guided tour, a high-level panorama across London.
This is a distinctive heritage stop rather than a wild landscape: the reward is a rare look inside a working Victorian clock tower, paired with far-reaching views from above North London.

Verified history
The clock tower stands in the former Caledonian Market site. A local history account says the Metropolitan Cattle Market opened here in 1855, designed by City of London Surveyor James Bunstone Bunning, with the clock tower at its centre. It describes the tower’s clock as made by John Moore & Sons and still mechanically driven. The same account says the livestock market closed in the 1930s and the meat market in the 1960s. The tower was restored in 2019, and official tours now offer access inside.
Hidden details
A clock still driven by its original mechanism — A local history account describes the clock as mechanically driven by weights and says it is wound once a week. Look for the mechanism and the details of its four clock faces during a guided visit.
When to go
· Choose a tour time with clear weather if you want the best chance of far-reaching views.
The main attraction is a guided visit inside the tower, so tour availability matters more than season. Clear conditions may improve skyline views.
Views from the tower may be affected by cloud or poor visibility. Check tour arrangements before travelling.
What to look for
Inside the tower, look for the clock mechanism and its four clock faces. From the viewing level, look across the London skyline. In the park, notice the surviving tower as a remnant of the former market site.
