Why it's Wildland

3.1

Once a watering place for horses and cattle, Beulah Hill Pond was locally known as the Big Pond. Its small urban setting still hints at the everyday journeys of livestock and the people who stopped beside it.

This is a modest urban pond rather than a wild retreat: its appeal lies in a pocket of local history and the birds using a green refuge beside a busy road. It is best approached as a brief, observant stop, not a destination for a long nature walk.

Verified history

Croydon Council describes Beulah Hill Pond as a former watering place for horses and cattle, locally called the Big Pond. A mid-19th-century plan showed the Conquering Hero public house beside it. The council says the pond was a favourite skating spot when it froze and that the Parks Department took responsibility for it in 1954. The Croydon Natural History & Scientific Society also records acquisition by Croydon Corporation in 1954.

Hidden details

A barrier across the water — The council history records a railing once placed across the middle of the pond to stop livestock straying into deeper water. The sources do not establish whether this feature survives.

The former Conquering Hero pub — A mid-19th-century plan showed the Conquering Hero public house beside the pond, consistent with the site’s role as a stop for people travelling with livestock.

Birds in an urban green pocket — The Croydon Natural History & Scientific Society notes moorhens and ducks, and describes small birds using the vegetated pond as a stop in urban Norwood.
