Why it's Wildland
5.3Among 130 bamboo species at Kew, a path through varied forms and foliage leads to a Japanese minka house with a history shaped by wartime loss and a remarkable transcontinental rebuild.
This is a compact, carefully composed garden rather than a wild landscape, but its unusual bamboo collection and the story of the Minka House give it a distinctive sense of place. Come for the contrast between the bamboo’s varied shapes and the traditional farmhouse tucked among it.

Verified history
The Minka House belonged to the Yonezu family, who lived there after their main house was bombed in 1945. After the last family member died, the house was donated to Kew by the Japan Minka Reuse and Recycle Association as part of the Japan 2001 Festival. Japanese carpenters and British builders rebuilt it at Kew; some of the builders had also worked on the Globe Theatre.
Folklore & legend
Kew notes a belief that sacred bamboo planted around the Minka House entrance can dispel bad dreams. This is presented as a belief, not a verified effect.
