Why it's Wildland

3.9

Built in 1626 for York House, this riverside gateway now stands inland: the Thames moved away when the Embankment was constructed in the 1860s.

York Watergate makes a small, tangible stop for anyone interested in how London’s riverfront has changed. Its strongest appeal is the contrast between its original role beside the Thames and its present position inland, alongside a surviving example of Inigo Jones’s Italianate design.

Verified history

York Watergate was built in 1626 by Inigo Jones as an extension to York House, the Strand residence of George Villiers, first Duke of Buckingham. It gave access from the house’s garden to the Thames. The gate now stands around 150 metres from the river, following the construction of the Thames Embankment between 1864 and 1870. A Buckingham family coat of arms remains visible at the top. The historical source describes it as one of a small number of surviving London structures reflecting the Italianate tastes of Charles I’s court.

Hidden details

The river is no longer at the gate — York Watergate’s position about 150 metres inland gives a physical sense of how much the river edge changed during the construction of the Thames Embankment.

The Buckingham arms — A close look above the gate may reveal the Buckingham family coat of arms, a detail noted in the historical account.

What to look for

Look for the Buckingham family coat of arms at the top of the gate. Its position, well inland from the present riverbank, also helps make the former river edge and the later Embankment works easier to imagine.
