Why it's Wildland

2.7

On a Highgate house once known as India House, a blue plaque marks the London home of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar from 1906 to 1909. The address became a hub for Indian nationalist organising—and a meeting place visited by Gandhi.

This is a compact heritage stop rather than a nature destination: its value lies in the physical address and the charged, complicated story attached to it. The plaque gives a street-level encounter with a significant chapter in the history of Indian nationalism in London.

The experience

A short, street-side heritage visit focused on the plaque and the history of the house. The plaque marks Savarkar’s residence from June 1906 to July 1909; the building was then known as India House. It is a private address, not a visitor attraction, so do not assume entry is possible.

Things to do

01

Read the blue plaque

The ceramic plaque commemorates Savarkar as an Indian patriot and philosopher and records that he lived here. View it from a permitted public position; the source does not establish access inside the property.

A short stop

02

Look for the India House connection

English Heritage identifies 65 Cromwell Avenue as the former India House, which served as a hostel for Indian students and a hub for political activity. Savarkar lived there from June 1906 until July 1909.

Verified history

English Heritage records that the plaque was erected in 1985 by the Greater London Council and that Savarkar lived at 65 Cromwell Avenue from June 1906 until July 1909, when the house was known as India House. Founded by Shyamaji Krishnavarma as a hostel for Indian students, it also became a base for organisations including the Indian Home Rule Society. Gandhi spent a night there on 20 October 1906. English Heritage says the plaque was unveiled by former MP Lord Fenner Brockway. Savarkar’s political legacy is contested; the same account notes that he was acquitted by the courts in connection with the assassination of Gandhi.
