Why it's Wildland
2.6A Victorian church with a changing story: St Mark’s was built in the 1840s, its tower and spire were completed later, and the building is now being rebuilt after a major fire in 2023.
St Mark’s has a documented architectural and community story, but it is not currently presented as a visitor attraction: its building is being rebuilt after the 2023 fire. Its strongest Wildland interest is as a heritage site to follow over time, rather than a destination for a substantial visit today.

Verified history
St Mark’s was built in 1846–47 by Thomas Cundy II. His son completed the tower and spire in 1864, and the porches, lobbies and chancel were added in 1877–78 by Benjamin Ferrey and/or his son Edmund. The baptistry followed in 1890. The spire was rebuilt in 1955 after war damage. Robinson Duckworth, vicar from 1870 to 1906, was a friend of Lewis Carroll and an instructor of Prince Leopold; he also officiated at Princess Beatrice’s confirmation in 1874 and accompanied the Prince of Wales on his 1875 tour of India. The church’s official website says the building suffered a catastrophic fire in 2023 and is being rebuilt.
Hidden details
A church built in stages — The tower and spire came after the original 1846–47 building; later additions included the porches, lobbies and chancel. The Victorian Web account traces these phases of construction.
A Victorian vicar with notable connections — Robinson Duckworth’s documented connections included Lewis Carroll, Prince Leopold and Princess Beatrice. The source records that he officiated at Beatrice’s confirmation in 1874.
