Why it's Wildland
3.5A monumental Portland-stone office block on the Strand, Shell Mex House was completed in 1931. Its riverside façade rises to a central clock tower, with sculpted figures and a ground-floor arcade among the details to look for from outside.
Shell Mex House is a striking piece of London’s commercial architectural history, but it is an urban streetside landmark rather than a nature-led destination. Its value for a Wildland visit is a brief look at the scale, stonework and clock-topped silhouette as part of a wider central London heritage walk.

The experience
A short exterior architecture stop. Admire the Strand frontage from the street and note that the building’s listed description distinguishes the Strand frontage from the specially noted riverside façade. Interior access is not confirmed.
Things to do
Study the clock tower and upper façade
From the street, look for the short central tower with its clock, buttresses and inset sculpted figures. The listed description also notes the stepped upper storeys.
10–20 minutes
Notice the ground-floor arcade
The official list entry describes an open, round-arched arcade at ground level. View it from the street; do not assume the building’s interior is open to visitors.

Verified history
Shell Mex House is an office block completed in 1931, designed by Messrs Joseph, with F Milton Cashmore identified as principal designer and WCH King as sculptor. Historic England lists it at Grade II; its description records Portland stone, a central clock tower, sculpted figures, stepped upper storeys and an open ground-floor arcade. It was first listed on 25 February 1987.
Hidden details
The listed façade is not the Strand frontage — Historic England’s description specifically notes that the Strand frontage is not of special interest, while detailing the building’s riverside façade. The main-place pin does not identify an entrance or guarantee a public viewpoint of the riverside side.
