Why it's Wildland

6.3

A chain of small coves tucked beneath granite headlands, with traces of a smuggling past and wide views across Mount’s Bay towards St Michael’s Mount.

This is more than a single beach: several small coves, rocky headlands and a coast-path loop make for a varied coastal visit. The Carter family’s smuggling history gives the landscape a human story, while the uneven paths and tucked-away shoreline retain a sense of discovery.

Things to do

01

Walk the Prussia Cove circular

Follow a loop combining a section of the South West Coast Path with inland footpaths and lanes. The supplied route descriptions differ in length, so check the current route map before setting out.

Verified history

The cove was originally called Porth Legh, meaning “Slab Cove”, and later took its name from John Carter, an eighteenth-century smuggler who called himself the King of Prussia. The supplied South West Coast Path account says Carter and his brothers ran a contraband business, using the sheltered coves and caves to land and store goods. It also describes Porth-en-Alls House as a 1911 Arts and Crafts design by Philip Tilden that was left unfinished after the outbreak of war in 1914.

Folklore & legend

Local lore says that the cellar of the clifftop house had a secret passage to the beach. Treat this as a reported story, not a verified feature visitors can enter or inspect.

Hidden details

Look for the old cart ruts — The walk account describes ruts worn up the hillside by donkey carts carrying goods ashore.

Find the fishermen’s huts — The route description notes abandoned fishermen’s huts on the clifftops above the coves. Observe them from public paths; do not enter structures.

When to go

April · May · June · July · August · September · A clear, settled day; check tide times before visiting the shoreline.

The supplied sources describe the route and coves but do not establish a uniquely best month. Longer daylight and settled conditions can make a coastal walk more practical; tide and sea conditions matter throughout the year.

Coastal paths can be exposed, rocky and uneven. The supplied beach guide warns of slippery rocks, strong currents and tidal surges, and says the coves are unpatrolled. Check the forecast and tide times; do not assume swimming is safe.
