Why it's Wildland

3.7

Below 85 Gracechurch Street, archaeologists found substantial foundations of Londinium’s first Roman basilica, including remains believed to lie in its Tribunal—the raised place where officials made civic and legal decisions. The proposed public experience was still a future plan in MOLA’s February 2025 account.

This is an extraordinary archaeological story beneath an ordinary-looking City street, but it is not presently a confirmed visitor attraction. Its Wildland appeal lies in the rare chance, if the proposed public space opens, to encounter the political heart of Roman London in its original setting.

Know this place a little better?

The experience

A highly significant archaeological site, but not a verified open attraction. MOLA describes plans to incorporate surviving remains into a future public exhibition and immersive experience, expected to open in 2029/2030. Until current access is confirmed, treat it as a point of historical interest rather than a place to enter.

Things to do

01

Understand the basilica’s civic role

MOLA describes the basilica as part of the Roman Forum and a political, judicial, commercial and social hub. Its account places the excavated foundations in the area thought to be the Tribunal.

10–20 minutes

02

Read the excavation account before visiting

MOLA records the test pits, the surviving foundations and the proposed public exhibition. Check for updated access information, as the source describes the visitor experience as a future plan.

Connect the site to Roman London’s wider story

A supplied Roman London walking-tour source discusses the forum area, Gracechurch Street and other traces of Londinium. Treat it as contextual material, not confirmation that this basilica site can be entered.

Verified history

MOLA’s February 2025 account says archaeologists working in the basement of 85 Gracechurch Street found substantial foundations and walls made of flint, ragstone and Roman tile. Some sections were estimated to be over 10 metres long, one metre wide and four metres deep. MOLA believes the remains include part of the basilica’s Tribunal. The basilica formed part of Londinium’s first Forum and was probably built in the late 70s or 80s AD, during Agricola’s governorship (78–84 AD). MOLA says a larger second forum began to be built around 20 years later; the first basilica was subsequently demolished. The site’s owners intended to incorporate surviving remains into a public exhibition and immersive experience, then expected to open in 2029/2030; that is a reported plan, not confirmation that it has opened.

Hidden details

The proposed Tribunal location — MOLA believes the foundations lie in the area of the basilica known as the Tribunal, a raised stage associated with civic decision-making. The exact remains are below the building and are not confirmed as publicly visible.

The first Forum was short-lived — MOLA reports that construction of a much larger second forum began around 20 years after the first. The earlier complex was eventually demolished, leaving archaeologists with limited evidence for its interior appearance.

What to look for

If the planned public display opens, look for the substantial flint, ragstone and Roman-tile foundations, and ask how archaeologists identify the area as the basilica’s Tribunal. The remains are currently described as being beneath the building, not visible from the street.
