Why it's Wildland

6.1

A former Bermondsey library now serves as a Tibetan Buddhist meditation centre. The building’s 1930s hall, with Art Deco sunbeam motifs, has become the main shrine room.

This is a distinctive place of learning in a former public library, with a documented local civic history and a striking reuse: its Art Deco hall now houses a large Buddhist shrine room. It is a worthwhile visit for its specific blend of Bermondsey history and living Buddhist practice, rather than as a general sightseeing stop.

Verified history

The centre says it bought the former Bermondsey library in June 2009 after years of searching and fundraising, and officially opened its Spa Road home in June 2010. The library opened in the 1890s as London’s first free public library. It was used by Alfred and Ada Salter as a base for public-health initiatives; the centre identifies Ada as Bermondsey’s first woman mayor. A large hall, added in the 1930s, has Art Deco sunbeam motifs and now serves as the main shrine room. The centre describes a 2.5-metre Buddha statue there and space for more than 200 people to practise meditation and learn about Buddhism. Its account also reports that playwright Harold Pinter later admitted stealing a book from the library.
