Why it's Wildland
6.4A village by the Severn where an iron bridge gave its name to a gorge—and became a turning point in engineering history.
Ironbridge earns its place through the rare meeting of a wooded river gorge and a landmark of industrial history. Beyond the famous bridge, paths climb into the valley and lead towards quieter viewpoints, woodland and traces of the Gorge’s working past.

Verified history
The Iron Bridge was erected over the River Severn in 1779. English Heritage identifies Abraham Darby III as the caster of its ironwork, using techniques developed by his grandfather, Abraham Darby, whose coke-smelting process helped catalyse the Industrial Revolution. The bridge helped establish cast iron as a material for bridges, aqueducts and buildings, and gave its name to the surrounding gorge.
