Why it's Wildland
5.3A fishing lake in the former Albyns Farm part of Hornchurch Country Park, where a quiet waterside visit sits within a landscape shaped by farming, wartime airfields and nature conservation.
Tit Lake offers a specific reason to explore this corner of Hornchurch Country Park: a working fishing water set within a wider landscape of marsh, river and historic airfield remains. The draw is a slower, purposeful visit rather than a claim of wilderness.

Verified history
The southern part of Hornchurch Country Park was within Dover’s Manor and later became Albyns Farm. The wider park also includes the former Suttons Farm airfield, selected in 1915 for Royal Flying Corps use. On the night of 2–3 September 1916, Lieutenant William Leefe Robinson took off from Suttons Farm and brought down the airship SL11 near Cuffley, for which he received the Victoria Cross. The airfield later became RAF Hornchurch, a significant fighter station during the Second World War. Havering Council notes that old farm buildings remain at Albyns Farm and identifies wartime defences in the park.
Hidden details
Albyns Farm in the park’s story — Havering Council records that the southern part of the park was once Albyns Farm and says old farm buildings remain. This is a useful clue to the landscape’s earlier agricultural life; check locally which buildings are visible from public paths.
A wartime dispersal bay — The park’s main car park at Squadrons Approach was an aircraft dispersal bay used to protect Spitfires and ground crews during the Second World War, according to Havering Council.
