Why it's Wildland

8.0

A limestone hill above the Severn Plain where rich wildlife and a visible Iron Age hill fort share the same far-reaching viewpoint.

Crickley Hill earns its place for the unusual combination of nationally recognised limestone grassland, recorded wildlife diversity, broad views over the Severn Plain and an Iron Age hill fort still visible on the hill. It offers more to notice than the panorama alone.

The experience

Combine a walk on the hill with time to take in the Severn Plain views, look for wildlife across grassland and woodland, and find the visible remains of the Iron Age hill fort. Paths include rough sections, so sturdy footwear is sensible in wet weather.

Things to do

01

Walk the Scrubbs and Short Wood loop

Follow the described 3.9 km loop through woodland and open parkland, with countryside views. The route has rougher sections that may be slippery in wet weather.

1–1.5 hours

02

Look for limestone grassland flowers

In the grassland, look for species named by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, including yellow wort, carline thistle, autumn gentian and clustered bellflower.

03

Find the visible Iron Age hill fort

Look for the hill fort remains on the summit. Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust describes the former enclosure and later fort as visible features of the site.

04

Watch for butterflies and birds

The reserve has records of more than 1,300 species. The Wildlife Trust notes that more than half of UK butterfly species have been recorded here and names long-tailed tits and chiffchaffs among woodland and scrub birds.

05

Look out for Belted Galloway cattle

These cattle help maintain the grassland. Observe them from a respectful distance and follow any current site notices.

Verified history

Crickley Hill has evidence of prehistoric settlement, including an enclosure with a causeway that was rebuilt several times following aggressive attacks. The enclosure was later replaced by an Iron Age hill fort, described by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust as still visible today. The fort occupied more than three hectares and was enclosed by a rubble-cored, timber-laced rampart.

Hidden details

The hill fort is more than a viewpoint — From the summit, look for the remains of the Iron Age hill fort: Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust says the fort is still visible and covered more than three hectares.

A managed grassland with distinctive cattle — Belted Galloway cattle help maintain the hill’s grassland. Their black-and-white bands make them easy to recognise, but keep a respectful distance.

A wealth of recorded wildlife — More than 1,300 species have been recorded at the reserve, including butterflies, birds, reptiles, wildflowers and fungi.
