Why it's Wildland

5.8

In the Black Country, pools, canal, streams, grassland and scrub have grown over a landscape once worked for coal, clay and brickmaking.

This is a varied urban-edge reserve with a tangible industrial past: former claypits and railway ground have become a connected landscape of pools, canal, woodland and scrub. Its appeal is the contrast between working Black Country history and wildlife-rich open space, rather than wilderness or a single spectacular feature.

Verified history

The present reserve lies in a landscape transformed by industry. The local information describes former collieries around the Dell, Leys and Wallows, claypits near Middle Pool and Farmers Pond, a brickworks on the Leys, and the Pensnett Railway, which carried coal from the Earl of Dudley’s Baggeridge pits to Round Oak Iron and Steel Works. As these uses disappeared, vegetation reclaimed spoil tips and former railway ground. Dudley Council also states that the Fens Pools were constructed as reservoirs by the Stourbridge Canal Company.

Hidden details

A canal company’s pools — Dudley Council says Grove Pool, Middle Pool and Fens Pool were constructed as reservoirs by the Stourbridge Canal Company. The canal links Buckpool Dingle and the Fens Pools.

A former coal railway through the landscape — The local history account describes the Pensnett Railway carrying coal from the Earl of Dudley’s Baggeridge pits to Round Oak Iron and Steel Works. It is a useful clue to the industrial past behind today’s green space.
