Why it's Wildland

4.4

On high ground near Ashwell, the earthworks of Arbury Banks mark a prehistoric enclosure whose buried traces may include entrances, buildings and storage pits. Its visible banks are only part of the story: the outer ditch and features within the interior survive largely below ground.

A scheduled hillfort with a substantial archaeological footprint, Arbury Banks rewards looking beyond what is immediately visible. Its scale, surviving earthwork and buried evidence make this a distinctive encounter with Hertfordshire’s prehistoric landscape, though access should be checked before setting out.

The experience

A compact heritage visit centred on the surviving earthworks and the wider archaeological story. Public access and a visitor route are not confirmed, so check arrangements before making a visit.

Things to do

01

Read the surviving earthworks

If access is confirmed, look for the internal bank, which survives intermittently and is most pronounced at the south-western end. The ditch is largely infilled and survives as a buried feature.

Part of a short visit

02

Imagine the buried enclosure

The monument’s interior contains archaeological features known from cropmarks and aerial photographs, including enclosures, hut circles and pits. These are evidence of what lies beneath, not a promise that each feature can be seen on site.

Part of a short visit

03

Consider the hillfort’s purpose

The site’s original role is uncertain. It may have held houses, animal enclosures, grain-storage pits or ritual spaces; the evidence does not establish a single explanation.

Verified history

Arbury Banks is a scheduled monument containing an Iron Age hillfort on high ground near Ashwell. The Ashwell village account says it was probably built in the late Bronze Age and notes that its purpose is uncertain. Historic England records the site as a scheduled monument first listed in 1923; it describes a ditch and internal bank, with archaeological deposits and features surviving below ground. Partial excavation of the defences in the 1850s established the scale and preservation of the outer ditch. The monument measures about 290m by 245m. The site’s buried remains may preserve evidence about its occupation, development and the environment of its inhabitants.

Hidden details

The ditch is still there, but mostly underground — The external ditch is largely infilled and survives as a buried feature; Historic England notes that it can be identified on aerial photographs. The Ashwell account also describes it as visible as a soilmark.

Two entrances are recorded in the earthwork plan — The Ashwell account describes two causeways through the defences: one to the north-north-west and another to the south-south-east. Their presence is part of the recorded monument description; current ground visibility is not confirmed.
